Eine Campinggasflasche mit Kochaufsatz, zwei Kerzen auf Kerzenständern, eine Schachtel Streichhölzer, ein kleines, batteriebetriebenes Radio und ein Buch – alles auf einem Küchentisch stehend: Ein Freund aus Madrid schickte mir einen Tag nach dem landesweiten Stromausfall in Spanien und Portugal, dieses Foto. Er werde alles aufbewahren für den Fall, dass sich solch ein „Supergau“ wiederholt.

Erst wenn so etwas geschieht, wenn Passagiere mitten in einem Tunnel aus dem Zug evakuiert werden müssen, die Verkehrsampeln ausfallen, das rote Lämpchen an der Gefriertruhe seit drei Stunden blinkt, der Aufzug stecken bleibt, die Kinder nicht erreichbar sind, weil die Mobilnetze ausfallen und man nicht auf Google recherchieren kann, was gerade passiert – erst dann merken wir, sie sehr der moderne Mensch auf den elektrischen Strom angewiesen ist.

Der Evangelist Johannes überlieferte vor knapp 2000 Jahren folgende Worte von Jesus Christus: „Bleibt in mir und ich in euch … denn ohne mich könnt ihr nichts tun.“ (Johannes 15,4-5) Zugegeben: Jesus spricht in Johannes 15 nicht über einen unter allen Umständen zu vermeidenden Stromausfall. Das war zu seiner Zeit kein Thema. Er meint die Verbindung zwischen dem Weinstock und den Reben: Ohne eine intakte Wasser- und Nahrungszufuhr gibt es nicht nur keine Frucht, sondern letztlich kein Leben.

Weinanbau ist nicht meine Welt. Aber in der Stromnutzung, da kenne ich mich als Verbraucher gut aus. In meiner Kindheit fiel (in Spanien) der Strom bei starkem Gewitter häufig aus, daher lagen Kerzen und Streichhölzer immer parat. Aber damals hatten wir zu Hause weder einen Computer noch einen Fernseher, keine Gefriertruhe und auch keine Handys. Ein stunden- oder tagelanger Stromausfall würde (nicht nur) mich heute völlig lahmlegen.

Vielleicht würde es Jesus heute so formulieren: „Lasst die Verbindung zu mir nicht abbrechen, denn ohne mich könnt ihr nichts tun; ohne mich seid ihr wie ein Elektrogerät ohne Strom, ein Wagen ohne Sprit, ein Mobiltelefon mit leerem Akku …“

Bei Jesus können wir täglich Kraft „von oben“ auftanken. Nicht nur morgens und abends, sondern über den ganzen Tag können wir mit ihm gedanklich verbunden bleiben, so wie ein Trolleybus im ständigen Kontakt mit der Oberleitung bleibt. Bei Jesus wird es niemals zu einem „Stromausfall“ kommen. Garantiert!

 

Total Blackout!

He said he would keep everything in case such a „worst-case scenario“ happens again.

It’s only when something like this occurs—when passengers have to be evacuated from a train in the middle of a tunnel, traffic lights fail, the red light on the freezer has been blinking for three hours, the elevator is stuck, the children are unreachable because mobile networks are down, and you can’t look up what’s going on via Google—that we realize just how dependent modern humans are on electricity.

Nearly 2,000 years ago, the evangelist John passed on these words from Jesus Christ: *“Remain in me, as I also remain in you… for apart from me you can do nothing.”* (John 15:4-5). Admittedly, Jesus wasn’t talking about a power outage that must be avoided at all costs. That wasn’t an issue in his time. He was referring to the connection between the vine and the branches: without a functioning supply of water and nutrients, there is not only no fruit, but ultimately no life.

Viticulture is not my world. But when it comes to electricity, I know my way around as a consumer. In my childhood (in Spain), the power would often go out during heavy storms, so we always had candles and matches ready. But back then, we had neither a computer nor a television, no freezer, and no mobile phones. A power outage lasting hours or even days would completely paralyze me today (and not just me).

Maybe Jesus would phrase it like this today: *“Don’t let your connection to me break, for without me you can do nothing; without me you are like an electrical appliance without power, a car without fuel, a mobile phone with a dead battery…”*

With Jesus, we can recharge our strength „from above“ every day. Not just in the morning and evening, but throughout the day we can remain mentally connected to Him—like a trolleybus that stays in constant contact with the overhead line. With Jesus, there will never be a “blackout.” Guaranteed!

¡Apagón total!

Una bombona de gas de camping con accesorio para cocinar, dos velas en candelabros, una caja de cerillas, una pequeña radio a pilas y un libro, todo colocado sobre una mesa de cocina: un amigo de Madrid me envió esta foto un día después del apagón general que afectó a España y Portugal. Dijo que guardaría todo por si se repite un „desastre total“ como ese.

Solo cuando sucede algo así —cuando los pasajeros deben ser evacuados de un tren en medio de un túnel, los semáforos dejan de funcionar, la luz roja del congelador parpadea desde hace tres horas, el ascensor se queda atascado, no se puede contactar con los niños porque las redes móviles han colapsado y no se puede buscar en Google qué está pasando— solo entonces nos damos cuenta de lo dependiente que es el ser humano moderno de la electricidad.

El evangelista Juan transmitió hace casi 2000 años estas palabras de Jesucristo: «Permaneced en mí, y yo en vosotros… porque separados de mí nada podéis hacer» (Juan 15:4-5). Es cierto: Jesús no hablaba en Juan 15 de un apagón que debe evitarse a toda costa. En su época eso no era un tema. Él se refería a la conexión entre la vid y los pámpanos: sin un suministro adecuado de agua y nutrientes no solo no hay fruto, sino que, en última instancia, no hay vida.

La viticultura no es lo mío. Pero en cuanto al uso de la electricidad, como consumidor me considero bastante experto. En mi infancia (en España), la electricidad se cortaba con frecuencia cuando había tormentas fuertes, por eso siempre teníamos velas y cerillas a mano. Pero entonces no teníamos en casa ni ordenador, ni televisor, ni congelador, ni teléfonos móviles. Un apagón de varias horas o días hoy en día me paralizaría por completo (y no solo a mí).

Quizá hoy Jesús lo diría así: «No cortéis vuestra conexión conmigo, porque sin mí no podéis hacer nada; sin mí sois como un aparato eléctrico sin corriente, un coche sin combustible, un móvil con la batería agotada…»

Con Jesús podemos recargar nuestras fuerzas “desde lo alto” cada día. No solo por la mañana o por la noche, sino durante todo el día podemos mantenernos mentalmente conectados con Él, como un trolebús en contacto permanente con la catenaria. Con Jesús, nunca habrá un “apagón”. ¡Garantizado!
